Ancient Greek Astronomy

Δέδυκε μεν ἀ σελάννα καὶ Πληΐαδεσ, μέσαι δὲ
νύκτεσ πάρα δ᾽ ἔρχετ᾽ ὤρα, ἔγω δὲ μόνα κατεύδω

The Moon has set and the Pleiades. It is midnight,
Time passes by, but alone in bed I lie
.                                     — Sappho (floruit c. 600 BCE)

This website is very much in its infancy but aims eventually to give a comprehensive guide to ancient Greek astronomy with an emphasis on analysis and sources. At the time of writing only a few pages have been developed and many individual entries are little more than stubs. In all likelihood, further development will not be very systematic. Notes, references and cross-references are always likely to be incomplete but it is my intention to work on them in time.

Please use the page links on the right to explore. Pertinent comments are welcome.
